I'm back from the dead...I think.
This was taken on a recent camping trip. We were told we could see "about 500 birds feeding" at this time of day so we went to check it out. We were in for a shock when we saw not 500 but 5,000 birds! This picture does no justice to the sheer size of the flock and the beauty of all of them moving as one to feed on sardines.
For a bit of a scale reference, from the back of the pier to the tip of the SS Palo Alto is over 1,000 feet, and this is only part of the flock (there were more coming in from the west!)
As a child in the early eighties I can remember walking fairly far onto the boat. Now there is no access to it as it is extremely unstable.
