she's a little too old to be wearing a pinafore as well, unless she'll be appearing in a gilbert and sullivan musical after the press conference.

I didn't like Santorum. But jeez, people. The kid's 8 years old (gasp! too old for dolls and pinafores!) . Her father just lost his job. Does she understand why? Probably not. Now she's pushed on stage, desperately trying to keep her crap together in front of a crowd, as cameras flash and people yell.

And now the hip liberal Internet community mocks a little kid. Quite lovely of you all.

I have an nine-year old. I see plenty of eight-year-old kids every day.

This kid is too old for that dress and the doll. If anything, she is being infantilized by her parents, most likely for political gain. Save your righteous indignation for her parents.

I'm sure she'll make them pay for it in a few years anyway. I hope she starts a blog.

dreamalynn says:

From every report, she's a very young-acting child, I'm sure the dress is a stage prop but I'd bet anything that the doll is a constant companion. And there's nothing wrong, IMO, with an 8 year old (I have one, myself) who takes a doll with her in times of high stress.

This picture, however, is exactly the kind of thing that Harold Ford, Jr. was talking about (in his brilliant concession speech) when he said "I love this country more than this process." The PA Senate race was not about Sarah Santorum. Her reaction to her father's loss should not have been front page in my local newspaper. Leave a little girl out of it; it's beyond the boundaries of good taste, let alone good politics.

I think the saddest thing about this is I'm sure these kids have been told on a regular basis that their dad was "doing the Lord's work.

So what does it say when their father loses like this? God isn't on their side? The Lord hates Daddy?

No wonder those kids look so pitiful.

Aside: The doll is an American Girl doll (made in China!) and yes, there's ridiculously overpriced matching clothes for the dolls and their owners.

@dreamalynn: Noone forced soon-to-be-former-Senator Santorum to drag his family up on stage during his concession speech. And noone told him to dress that little girl up like Laura Ingalls with a matching, overpriced baby doll and plant her front and center. Clearly he knew the image of his broken-hearted daughter would end up smeared all over the national media like so much frothy mixture of semen and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex.

@ladygypsy "Now she's pushed on stage ..."

Right. And if you look closely you can see that the hands doing the pushing belong to her mother!

Your attempts to paint this girl as a victim of liberal scourn are pathetic. She's a victim of her parents repressed sensibilities and exploitative behavior. Your self-righteousness is stinking up this thread.

@be OH be -- I'm sure that the child had no choice about whether or not she'd be on that stage, and most certainly did not seek the spotlight. If you want to slag her father, be my guest. I find him repulsive, and as a Pennsylvanian, I was proud to be a part of his ouster. But it's juvenile and crass and low to point and laugh at a scared, sad child and make light of her emotions, no matter who her father happens to be. She is not her father, and is barely old enough to have the most basic idea of his positions. Her public appearance is incidental, not intentional on her part, and after all of yesterday's success, it wouldn't hurt a single left-leaning person in this country to take the damned high road where an innocent kid is involved.

it occurred to me while I was thinking about this picture today that maybe the girl is crying not merely because daddy lost his job. how many times has the family prayed before dinner, asking the good Lord to continue to help them make the world a better place, continue to build an America that values family, God, and proper Christian values?

A few kids are missing from the photo:

He and his wife, Karen, have seven children - including, as Santorum puts it, "the one in Heaven." Their fourth baby, Gabriel Michael, died in 1996, two hours after an emergency delivery in Karen Santorum's 20th week of pregnancy. The couple took Gabriel's body home to let their three other young children see and hold the baby before burying him, according to Karen Santorum's book of the ordeal, "Letters to Gabriel."

Thanx for that heads-up, Mickipedia. I find it explains a lot. Mercifully, the tramautized 8-year-old holding the doll was born too late to have to be part of the let's-all-hold-the-one-who's-gone-to-God scenario. What kind of parents pattle of "family values" and then choose to put young children through such unnecessary--and probably emotionally unhealthy--ordeals?

On a lighter note, a shout-out to jessamyn, as well. Your note taking us into the boy's possible thoughts hits the nail on the head. If you haven't seen it, folks, go back to the picture and click on the stunned son's face. It's worth the scroll.
