Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, Oct-2011.
This sumptuous reading room contains more than 350,000 books, mostly about the portuguese culture (it is the biggest library in the world about portuguese subjects outside Portugal). It was built in the Neo-manueline style in 1837 and is four stories tall, full of jacaranda tables and bookshelves, capped with a stained-glass dome and illuminated by an elaborate chandelier. Its unusual facade is stylized with sailors’ knots, seashells, and Moorish motifs.
