1922 narrow gauge • Cedar Point Amusement Park

The 1922 Myron H. narrow gauge steam locomotive passing the Cedar Point & Lake Erie Railroad grade crossing at Gemini Midway.

It's challenging to get a clear shot. This seemed the only spot to shoot gates, gate house and approaching steam engine. Stake your place early. Minimal bystanders and split-second timing are key. Listen for the tooting locomotive whistle, signalling departure from the Frontier Town Station. Then, anticipate the speed of the unseen approaching engine, hiding behind a curve and wooded area. You have to hold your camera above gate level; higher if you want to capture the cowcatcher. And, you have to tactfully ignore the gatekeeper yelling over the loudspeakers to “Step back...” Grab your single shot, quickly disappear into the crowd and fix it in post processing when you get home. Good luck!
