Cerknica Intermittent Lake
![]() The famous Cerknica plain with the intermittent lake changes its form every season of the year. Every time you visit it, it's different.
Lake Cerknica is the largest lake in Slovenia and the largest intermittent lake in Europe, with the surface of 26 km2. The intermittent lake is closely connected with karstic phenomena. It fills with water in autumn and freezes over in winter, thus, making it possible to ice skate on its surface. In early spring it turns into endless grassland. Aside from the interesting Karst hydrology, it is inhabited by many different animal and plant species. This is where our last Flickr meetup took place. The plain hasn't filled up with water yet so we will definitely want to return. © All rights reserved. Please do not use my photo without my explicit permission.
