Lying in bed watching the sunset over Sennen. Sunsets at sea don't go on for hours and hours the way they do over the land, the sun drops below the horizon and that's it - unless there are storm clouds far out to catch and hold the last rays of the sun. But as I was trying to scan the cloud banks for the last twinges of purple and gold, I spied a tanker, far off in the distance, its light shining like a beacon, though sometimes it would dip below the horizon and the light would look like it was extinguished, a few minutes later, it would pop back up on course. I think there's a metaphor in there if you look closely.
