Real Rapid PrototypingOriginal gearbox frame not ready for prime time! First printed clip. Lots of problems, not the least of which is my bad MakerBot firmware! Second go-- improved the shape of the pins, but the bad firmware was still having it's way. Also made it thicker to be sturdier. Third clip-- way improved thanks to a firmware upgrade, but the hole on the back for the motor was too small! Fourth run! The hole on the back was *still* too small, and the grippers were a little too small. After the failed motor plate, I designed a minimal version. The motor didn't fit it and neither did the clip! Finally! The plate's a *little* too thick but it's close enough that the motor clips in, and stays. Really satisfying! ![]() In the upper right of this picture, there's a standard DC motor held quite securely to a flat wall of plastic. Locking a motor into place is the first of many mechanical hurdles between me and a truly printable gearbox, and the MakerBot has enabled a rapid design cycle, showing me what would work and what wouldn't, in a hurry.

With the clip designed, I'm ready to solve problems like getting a pinion gear to stick, rome gears to interface the pinion, and a mechanical framework to hold them all in place together. Would you like to comment?Sign up for a free account, or sign in (if you're already a member). |
