More milk

More milk by McNeney.
i don't normally repeat myself like this but... y'know... i spent a whole day shooting exploding milk... so I figure i might as well... ahem... milk it for all it's worth

I have an uneasy history with milk. It was ever-present in our lives when I was growing up. My mom always had a milk cow on the go and our front porch housed the (scary music, please) separator... a complex concoction of metal rings and discs and heavy whirring parts and octopus-ish arms.

In many ways, the separator was our friend. It sorted out the skim milk, which we gave to the pigs and chickens, and left us with cream, which... in addition to the usual uses for cream... my mom turned into butter and, even better, ice cream. The downsides were these:

1. My sisters and I had to wash and dry that complex fucker every day. Oy. This included taking it apart with a wrench-like thing, and then scrubbing and drying all those countless bits of metal. The discs were the worst. We all despised them. There were twelve... each a cone-shaped piece of metal with raised rounded rivets, in which bits of milk and cream would hide and cling and resist attempts to rout them.

2. The smell. No matter how well we cleaned the separator and its supports and its living quarters, I could always detect a lingering animal smell of milk. Inevitably, some tiny splash would end up somewhere we hadn't thought of cleaning, and would sour, and... lucky me; I happen to have inherited the nose of a blood hound. I can smell a dime-sized drop of sour milk at 200 paces. And... even today... I have zero tolerance for any kind of sour milk product - yogurt, sour cream, cottage cheese, etc. I'm gagging just writing this.

Yesterday, after my shooting (and smashing and splashing) I got to work cleaning up the mess. And some of the milk had, of course, dried. And it was warm. And the smell was... just like the old days.

Funny. In the barn, as the milk was coming out of the cow in long white streaks, I found that smell comforting and sweet and homey. Take it indoors and it's a whole 'nother story. I have not been able to stomach drinking milk since some time in my teens. These days (as mentioned with the previous pic) I mainly enjoy its visual properties.

No better way to promote milk I'd say. I can already see the slogan: "Milk: makes you burst with energy"
This two milk shots are s-p-e-c-t-a-c-u-l-a-r by the way.

Seems obvious from your descriptive story that you could enjoy sour cream if you simply brought in a bucket of cow chips and barn dirt.

Yum.

At first glance I thought you had layered-in the milk suspension because of the repeated rabbit near your hand and the flying bird near your left ear - but since other droplets are clearly different, that was simply a coincidence.

Great, imaginative photography.

Whoa, manipulation or not, that rocks!

I think the glass was floating in water, then something was thrown into the middle of it and the pretty gal had a good time modeling safe and dry...

Donpixote, Dan Bailiff... not quite sure I understand where your skepticism and allegations of lying (???) come from. Dan... can you point out the lie I told? I'm certainly not aware of it.

If you're trying to claim that I'm trying to claim that I somehow, magically, got a glass of milk to explode in my hand... please review my descriptions and comments. I've said no such thing. I simply explained that it was hard work getting the glass to break and capturing the milk all aspatter. And... (earth to critics) I included the first pic in my Digital Diddling set. Which is composed entirely of photo manipulations. Ahem.

miceland (what a lovely name, by the way!)...

this is one of those images i've had in my head for a while; i've had to wait for the weather to cooperate to pull it off because... even for me... it's waaay too messy to do indoors; it was also quite a challenge figuring out how to get the glass to smash all dramatic-like; first, i figured i'd be able to do it by throwing stones; ha. No go. Then I asked my mom if I could borrow her gun. She was willing, but concerned about my bad aim, and the potential for collateral damage. So that was another dead end. Then I tried a bunch of other ways to smash the glasses and... holy heck. I can't believe they break so easily when i'm washing them... 'cause they sure are freakin' durable when I WANT them to break! Anyway, I used rocks. Of many different sizes. And dropped them from various heights to create maximum splashage. And spilled a whole lotta milk.

Mike came home for lunch while I was working on this. I asked if he would help and he said "NO!!" I guess not everyone enjoys taking part in wanton destruction and mess-making. (Shrug.)

It seems Mary Anne DID explain, (to folks with a 4th grade education , or higher) that this was a manipulated image, and explained her decision making process that led to her choosing rocks to break the glass. She even described the many glasses that were broken in the process.
It's a freakin' PHOTOGRAPH for Christs sake! Chill out and appreciate it (or not) It is what it is.

Donpixote... seriously? When you read my description of smashing glasses with a rock... you seriously, honestly believed that I was saying (not that I did say, because why would I when it so clearly isn't true?)... you read into my comments that I did all this smashing of glasses with rocks WHILE holding one such shattering glass in one hand (and having another hand on my hip... um how did you think i was throwing the rocks?), AND working the camera at the same time? Seriously????

You are too nice. I just can't stand people who have nothing better to do that go around policing things they don't understand. It's like people who still accuse Bill Shatner of over-acting.

Oh... Dan. You're some piece of work. Here you are today acting nice... but still insulting me. What IS your problem? "Ridiculous statements"? What are you... evil twins?

First you accuse of me lying. You crap on me for not "explaining" how I did what I did. And then... in the process of a quasi-apology, you call my explanation ridiculous?

Pfft.
