Global Latvian media?

Global Latvian media?

Riga-Latvia:

A few weeks ago I visited Latvia, a country that gained independance around 20 years ago as a part of a study visit and to participate in Anna Lindh foundation's festival "The other Side of the Mediterrenean" where I spoke about women in Egypt and the Middle East and showed some photos of Women in Egypt. One of the impressions I got about Latvia was the way the "Globalization" culture is taking over in a country that is younger than I am, still forming its own identity & distinctive culture. American magazines were in the Kiosks, with exactly the same content, same pages just with different language. It was clearly reflected on women fashion, stores, food chains,...etc.

Taha..

Taha..

While I was walking through the streets of Helwan (A large middle class Neighborhood south Cairo) with my camera, I saw Taha...I think he's around ten. Watching a movie that goes back to the 90s, he had an amazing smile watching Yousra, the Egyptian actress talking on the screen that he was so close to. We shared looks for a few seconds then he moved away from the TV to grab his broom and gave me his back...

The shoe mender

The shoe mender

Cairo- September 7th:

A Friday morning, It was my weekend so I had some free time for a walk but he didn't. The shoe mender, whose day off is on Sunday just like the shops around him in Al Azhar neighborhood, was working on some sandals & shoes. I asked him for permission before I took a photo of him so I can speak with him for a while but he was too busy working & I was lucky to get a non posed photo of him even while he knew that he was being photographed.

This is a part of my "100 wesh w wesh" project.

Off camera

Off camera

On the edge of the metropolitan, lies the suburban Arab Abu Sae'd, an extremely poor village southern Cairo.
I went there a few years ago with one the NGOs that took the initiative to help the families get better chances to live, the kids to get better education & men to get better job opportunities.
Two young teens then asked me to take a photo of them but were too shy to look directly to the camera.
