Who Are You?![]() ![]() I'm not sure which type of hummingbird this was - the shortish bill, green flanks and purplish throat narrows the list, but I'm struggling beyond that. I'm assuming this is an immature bird (although it seems early for that). I know that the orange on the head and throat is most likely pollen, so that's no help. Anyone better with hummer IDs willing to help?
Seen in Florida Canyon, AZ in early May. update: This is possibly a first summer Costa's Hummingbird (male). Still waiting for confirmation. Commentsfieldguidetohummingbirds says:Definitely not a Costa's, Marty - the tail is
too long and pointed, and the "5-o'clock
shadow" is too rounded at the corners.
If we ignore the apparently Black-chinned-like rectrices, it's a good
fit for a second-year male Broad-tailed, and
the stage of molt is consistent with the
date. Do you have these shots in higher
resolution or from a different angle showing
the rectrix shapes better?
stolmstead says:I think you can rule out Costa's - the tail
is just too long! Looks a lot like a
Broad-tailed to me.
