Northern Cardinal - female
Cardinalis cardinalis

A brief winter snow shower provided the perfect backdrop for some birds coming in for food at our feeders. This female cardinal was wary but hungry enough to stop by for some nuts - the male wouldn't come anywhere near the platform, though.

Very good catch - for some reason, birds just seem more wary in winter than when food is more abundant.

Great DOF really sets the bird apart from the background. Very well done. Congrats and best wishes for the New Year.

The cardinals coming to my feeder seem to sense the exact moment when I pick up my camera!

Wonderful shot, Marty, even the female's a looker. The Cardinals at Ron's feeder sound a lot like my Kingfishers.

BEST VIEWED LARGE. I've said it before, I love the females the best. So nice and subtle with the coloring.

Beautiful detail in this one, Marty.

Awesome shot!

I'm going to see some cardinals myself soon.
Al and I are headed back to Texas. We aren't going to Galveston as planned but back to the Rio Grande Valley. I can't wait!!

Thanks, everyone - it felt really good (if a little cold) to get out there with a camera again AND have cooperative subjects to take pictures of.

Patty - I'm jealous. I loved it down there. When are you heading down to LRGV?

I found the cardinals in Maine at my bro's place to be pretty skittish too, and they'd often arrive at the feeders with the blue jays. And of course the Jay's are super vocal when they sense a threat or get annoyed.

We leave Saturday the 10th. We are going to be there until the 19th. I really did want to go to Galveston, but LRGV is just as good if not better!
Should be fun and warm!
