Here's lookin' at you, kid.![]() ![]() European Mantis
Mantis religiosa You can learn a lot trying to ID something. I learned that there are 3 major types of praying mantis in my area - the Carolina Mantis, the Chinese Mantis and the most common, the European Mantis. They each have their slight variations, including multiple color forms. I was lucky enough to see three different mantises the day I took this - one a beautiful pure green, this one completely brown, and one that had a little of both. And they all looked well-fed, so I guess the bugs at Palmyra were looking over their shoulders for these assassins. CommentsDoug Lloyd

Awesome close up of the brown mantis. I love these guys...very very alien loooking. I think we have all three varieties too. Nice find. I found one last week and brought home to photograph. When I took it out of the container, I got squeemish about holding it, and alas, it flew away.
