Delaware Skipper

Looks like a dark mark on the other side of the wing which could be an Aaron's Skipper. The sideshot looks like an Aaron's i saw today. These 2 butterfies sometimes get confused with Delaware.

Some more shots from my visit to Palmyra Cove last weekend. Went back today to find little more than a migraine. I'm mostly sure that this is a Delaware Skipper, but would welcome help from those better than I for confirmation.

Looks a lot like the Sachem Skippers we have here. Nice shot of it ...tack sharp in nice light and green surroundings. I love these moth like butterflies.

Doesn't seem bright enough to be Delaware. The ones i've been seeing are bright bright orange. The mark on it confuses me. See note above.

Thanks, everyone - as you can see from Shawn's comment & note, these can be really tough to ID.

Shawn - looking at my field guide (Butterflies through Binocs), it seems like the Delaware can have black on the inner side of the wing. And looking at shots on the web makes this seem to be more Delaware than Aaron's. Your thoughts?

Most probably Delaware because of location. If you were more south, then it would be a tough decision.

Since it's a skipper I've never seen, I'll let everyone else give you a definitive answer. What i DO know is that is a really nice shot.

My vote would be male Sachem. It's got the mark on the bottom margin of the hindwing, which is supposed to be diagnostic (IIRC). And that would explain the slightly duller color. Other marks match too, and flight time is right.

Hmm, there were a ton of other sachem around, and none of them were this same vibrant orange. Also, the interior of the wings was different than sachem (but I don't have any pictures of that, of course).

Don't I know it. I need to take a day off to go picture-taking, and another to do some processing, and a third to do some posting. Not likely to happen, but it's what I should do.
