Killdeer nest with 3 eggs

Killdeer nest with 3 eggs by martytdx.
I helped a friend out yesterday with a bird survey he was involved in in southern Delaware (okay, I admit it - I was actually looking forward to it, so it wasn't really that big a favor). Toward the end of a rather rainy day, we headed up one last road to see what we could find. It wasn't until we were turning to leave that Joe and I saw the Killdeer doing her famous 'broken wing' dance.

It was then that Joe saw the nest smack in the middle of the road. Nervous that the eggs might get run over, we made (at my insistence) 2 small cairns about 5' feet on either side of the nest to provide notice to anyone driving to stay in the already made ruts in the road. And if the rangers come and see the piles, THEY'LL know to make whatever arrangements are necessary.

Still, I had to get a shot of these very cool eggs.

I wish killdeer wouldn't do this....I wonder how many eggs are destroyed by passing vehicles. I saw killdeer yesterday while walking near a gravel area on the side of the road. I looked for eggs but am not as obervant as you. they sure do blend in. Good for you for making the nest[s] more visible.

Good spotting and shooting. You can always find the nest if you go in the opposite direction from where Mom is trying to lead you.

They don't always nest in good spots though. When I was a kid we had one nest on the gravel parking lot of our church. We built a barrier around it too and the minister announced that everyone should be careful of the nest. We were rewarded with seeing the chicks running around until they fledged.

It was a pretty cool thing to see - we had two other spots that the adults were trying to get us to leave but we didn't see the nests (and didn't want to walk around for fear of finding the hard way).

Red~star - chances are that anyone driving up that road would have missed them anyway, but I figured 'why take a chance?'.
qt_flickr - I'd love to see that, but I'm not sure I'll be down there any time soon to see the value of our efforts. I'll just assume they are going to be little furballs running around soon.

Those eggs sure have great camo. I see the Killdeer's doing the broken wing act around here a lot but I've never been able to find the nest. Good eye, both of you guys.

Camden - the eye belonged to my buddy Joe. I think I actually walked past the nest.

Shepherd
- a bad day of birding beats a good day at work, right?
