Quest for the Common Green Darner

Quest for the Common Green Darner by martytdx.
Common Green Darner - male
Anax junius

For a couple of years now, ever since I first saw these huge dragonflies at Palmyra Cove, I've been trying to get a good shot of one of the males. The problem is that the males seem to never stop moving, and my success at getting a flight shot has been less than optimal.

So imagine my excitement at seeing two or three of them taking turns perching at Stump Sound Park while I was in NC. It was still tough to get the shot, as I had to lean a dangerous distance to get past the cattails, but I am happy that I finally can add a good shot of the male to my dragonfly lifelist.

Gorgeous -- these are very showy. I don't think they make it up to my neck of the woods.

Crystal clear capture! I know how restless these male darners are. I'm only having luck with the females lately :-)

Marty,

Did you see the male I posted on page two of my pics that is scarfing down a female Variegated Meadowhawk (Sympetrum corruptum)?

Thanks, everyone - it was a joy to finally get to see one landed AND get the shot.

Jack - I'm not sure. They are fairly common (hence the name, which I've usually found to be a misnomer), but I'm not sure if they make it that far north.

Markopoulos - It was a bit of an incessant quest. My wife would make fun of me for it (often). Oddly, I've had better luck with the females, too. I have a few shots of one laying eggs from this same stop.

Jerry - I hadn't but I'll go check it out.

Shep - Yeah, they're among my favorites b/c of their size and color. BTW, the trip was fun although a little sparse on the nature - fewer dragonflies, butterflies AND birds this year than any of our previous trips.

What a very good pair of images. That bulls-eye on the frons is quite distinctive - I'll know what I'm looking at when the next few vargants are swept over here in the wake of a hurricane.
