Colorful house number, two by Martin LaBar

Colorful house number, two

A house number, on a tile, we happened to pass while walking in the older part (near the Battery) of Charleston, South Carolina. Colorful, for sure, in spite of the crack.

Cannonballs, Whitepoint Gardens, Charleston, SC by Martin LaBar

Cannonballs, Whitepoint Gardens, Charleston, SC

This stack of cannonballs is part of several mementos of the Civil War at Whitepoint Gardens, next to the Battery (waterfront) of Charleston, SC, and within a short distance from the group of houses known as Rainbow Row.

I''m not a fan of violence, but these were artistically stacked, and appear to be frequently polished -- you can see reflections of other balls on the surfaces of most of these -- and this stack appealed to me as an art object.

Charleston has a long (for North America) history, including its role in the Civil War.

Castle made from sea oats by Martin LaBar

Castle made from sea oats

Glad to be back Flickring. I know that this isn't a typical photo from this photostream, but I doubt it would be typical of anyone's photostream . . .

When we went to Charleston, SC, I decided that I had to at least see the beach for a few minutes. Someone who was at the Atlantic Ocean at Sullivan's Island had too much time on his/her/their hands, it seems. I didn't make this, I just shot it.

White cornflower with pink center, with fly, probably syrphid. by Martin LaBar

White cornflower with pink center, with fly, probably syrphid.

This is the last of my cornflower photos for a while, probably for a year or so. Also, I'm going on hiatus, because of some travel to see family.

This shows that Centaurus cyanus can appear in shades of blue, and also in this pink or purple color, as well as white. Cornflowers, being members of the Asteraceae, have two types of flowers, growing together in a flowering head, namely sterile, but showy ray flowers, and smaller, but fertile, disc flowers. Both types are easily visible here.

lika2009 has identified the insect (see her comment, below) as a syrphid fly, Toxomerus marginatus. That works for me.

Isn't God a great artist? More detail visible at the larger sizes.

I hope to see more of my Contact's photos in a dozen or so days. Thanks for looking, whoever you are.

Blue cornflower with blue center by Martin LaBar

Blue cornflower with blue center

Another cornflower (Centaurae cyanus) photo, from this year's crop. All of these were found in a hayfield. I don't know if they escaped from someone's flower garden, or grow wild.

I'm not sure what the white bump on the ray flower in the lower right might be.

More detail visible at the larger sizes.
