Nice picture, Martin!
The porch looks quite different from the photograph in Philadelphia YM's "Silent Witness: Quaker meetinghouses in the Delaware Valley, 1695 to the Present" (after 2000). Do you have any information on the meetinghouse's recent history?

Hi John: that's a different Middletown meetinghouse, about half a mile down the road. The date stone reading "1835" in another shot in this series gives it away: the meeting community split in the first round of American Quaker schisms: "Silent Witness" profiles the old meetinghouse, which the Hicksites retained; I attend the Orthodox (Wilburite/Conservative) meeting.

It's not uncommon to find meetinghouses across the street or down the road from one another in these parts. Both Middletowns are active though I understand from second-hand reports that the Hicksites are down to a few people. In most places, the meeting communities reconciled over the course of the 20th Century, leaving them with an extra meetinghouse. They have sometimes been converted to other uses, been moved (by an odd twist of events my membership meeting has an Orthodox meetinghouse from Woodstown NJ--sixty miles away!--more or less just parked in the back yard) or sadly left to decay.

ps; you might like NJChurchscapes, a site which chronicles churches in the state of New Jersey. Quite a few entries are Friends meetinghouses and the commentary is nearly always very informed and interesting.
