2008-10-21-212_2 Shaftesbury Gold Hill - Dorset England October 2008

Gold Hill - Shaftesbury, Dorset. This scene is famous as the location for the 'Hovis' commercials, now some decades old!
I visited it on a photography course and we spent some time photographing it. I found that it wasn't a very easy subject; the sun was illuminating the left hand side of the road nicely, but on the right hand side there was a notably ugly wall which I found I needed to minimise in the image. I tried a lot of shots, and when I found I'd got the road right the attractive sky that was visible when we started had moved on!
I ended up doing lots of editing to get the elements together and nicely lit. I opted for concentrating on the buildings and darkening the background; I manage to rescue the sky, this has been darkened quite a bit. The worst thing was the bush on the RH side of the photo; this took ages to crop and manipulate so that the sky and not white space could be seen through the branches! So it's kept me well out of mischief for the last three days. I hope it's worth the trouble.
I lightened it slightly in Picknik on loading.
Incidentally this is edited with the 'PhotoStudio' program that came with my camera. I never see any references to anyone working with it; but it can be made to give reasonable results (I think), and it is free!

If memory serves me well, it was Ridley Scott who directed the early Hovis ads at Gold Hill. I'm sure he had to suffer the same lighting issues that you did at some point. :)

Really nice shot. It's getting harder and harder to find such unspoilt areas of rural England.
