My dad was a minister, christian and lover of candy. I thought he
would appreciate some jelly beans.

That's sweet (in more ways than one!) It reminds me of the Mexican custom for Day of the Dead, when they build altars in memory of their loved ones and leave their favorite foods on the altar in hopes that the dearly departed will stop by for a visit.
