Stealth Commuting Rain Pants

Stealth Commuting Rain Pants by Mark Stosberg.
I had this dream. Pants that looked normal enough to wear to work, but with hidden super powers of water repellency. The elusive versitale garment sought after by bicycle and pedestrian commuters: Stealth Commuting Rain Pants.

It was immediately clear when they arrived tonight that they looked fairly normal and fit very well, but the hidden super powers needed to be tested. Conveniently, the kitchen floor needed mopping as well.

The pants passed the test perfectly. As you can see in the "after" photo, there are no dark spots from water soaking through-- it just rolled off.

The pants are also breathable, stretchy, and are lined with a millimeter of soft, warm fleece— not since Chuck Norris Action Jeans have pants with hidden super powers looked and felt this good.

Ok, so I never had the Chuck Norris Action Jeans. But when I was kid and saw the ads in Ninja magazine, they sure looked cool!

The particular pants I have are the Cold Fusion Soft Shell pants from Beyond. Beyond is an extraordinary company— all their garments are customized to provide the features and exact fit that their customers orders.

Too often I've found that Big & Tall sizes doesn't mean Big OR Tall.

I realized the fabric would be perfect for this product after I tried the custom-fit rain pants that Foxwear makes from basically the same fabric. Unfortunately, the Foxwear design screams "Hey, I'm a pair of bicycling rain pants!". The Foxwear superpowers were not stealth, but they give birth to my dream.

mark, at first I thought this was a joke, but now I see that you're serious (you're funny anyway :) What a great idea. I don't know why I haven't seen it before. I'm going to have to start looking around.

Great picture.

If you are looking for just the fabric rather than a finished product, I think it's the same as or similar to the Power Shield fabric made by Malden Mills. I'm not sure how to buy the fabric directly, though. The water repellency comes from a chemical coating applied to the fabric, which could possibly wear out before the garment does, but could be rejuvenated with one of the after-market waterproofing sprays.

What I did was to first request that Beyond mail me samples of their various fabrics. That way I was able to confirm I would be getting the material I expected before I ordered.

Mark,
Beyon makes really nice stuff.

Check out Nikwax Techwash and Nikwax TX Direct Wash in for maintaining the water-beading effect that your pants currently have. If you wash them with a standard detergent soap, you will strip the "chemical coating applied to the fabric" also known as a DWP (durable water repelancy). Using a non detergent soap like the Nikwax Techwash will help keep them working well, and when you need to re waterproof them you can use the TX Direct.

, thanks for the suggestion. I just ordered some Nikwax Techwash to protect my investment. I'm also going to try to waterproof some polyester-based dress pants I have and see what happens!
