bakfiets: one year in

bakfiets: one year in by Mark Stosberg.
Today marks one year of bakfiets riding for our family. We rode bikes out to dinner tonight.

For a bit there was another cyclist on the road with us for a while who actually stopping at stoplights and stop signs. That's encouraging for our town.

( I tried to save this poorly lit photo by adjusting the Levels and Curves with the Gimp. I'm not sure where the yellow glow is coming from. That was in the unaltered photo. )

Hey Mark. Congrats. How'd it do, maintenance-wise?

It's either coming from the reflector on her pedal. Or, it's the radiance of her soul emanating through her toes.

These bikes are very low maintenance. Chain case. Internal hub gears and brakes. I've ridden an 8-speed Shimano hub on my commuter bike since 2004 (about 4,000 miles on that bike) without a single tune up on it. The only thing I've had to do is make a minor adjustment to the brake cable -- last year -- once.

Also, they usually have Schwaulbe Marathoner Plus tires on them. I rode 3,000 miles on one before I got my first flat. It took a 4 inch, serrated nail to get through it.

I'm very impressed with the Marathon plus as well - haven't had a flat yet (touch wood).

yeah, you did save it. I like the yellow glow. Very romantic off into the sunset kind of look to it.
