On the top of Shelf Moor, near Bleaklow in the Peak District, an eerie site greets the walker. The wreakage of a B-29 Superfortress, which crashed in 1948. While the weather and the passage of time has worn a lot away, some substantial items remain.
The plaque on the small memorial stone reads as follows:
"In Memory. Here lies the wreckage of a B-29 Superfortress "Overexposed" of the 16th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron USAF which tragically crashed whilst descending through cloud on 3rd November 148 killing all 13 crewmembers. The aircraft was on a routine flight from RAF Scampton to American AFB Burtonwood. It is doubtful the crew ever saw the ground. Memorial laid by 367 Air Navigation course of RAF Finningley on 12 November 1988"
