Priddy Pool

First proper attempt at a false colour near infrared image. Taken on my 60D, custom white balance and a 720nm IR filter from ebay.
I have a long way to go before I'm happy with the photo's I'm producing with this filter but I'll get there

Well I was just messing about and happened to visit bighugelabs so I thought I would enter my name into scout and see what came out.

Apparently this image went up to #1 in interestingness on 19th July 2012. Now I never knew that

yep got it and working my way through it.

      thanks

I like BW IR but tbh the BW that I was getting from this filter could of been produced by just converting to BW without using the IR filter. So to make it feel like I've used it I went for the false colour and swapped the blue & red channels

Very ethereal. I think I have an article somewhere on processing IR. I try and dig it out for Thursday.

Very interesting, you havn't gone for the modified sensor yet, which seems to be fashionable again

Not tried IR in ages; I was rather excited about it at one point a few years back, but realised that some cameras were better at it than others due to the sensitivity of the sensor. My D40 was not as good as a D50 (its older replacement) so my results were not what I wanted. A number of IR shooters have a camera converted to remove the IR block filter, thus allowing you to shoot high speed IR rather than going with a long exposure and allowing the IR light to trickle in. I can see you are on the right tracks, although am not sure about the colours here. I don't think there are any great tips aside from the swapping of blue and red channels, I think a lot comes down to how sensitive your camera is to IR - I did see a comparison where someone took the same shot with both the D40 and D50 and swapped channels and how different both shots looked. Also, I would not rule out black and white entirely, from what I have seen B&W IRs are very contrasty and give great clarity as a result. Whilst you can convert to B&W, you lose a lot of quality in the process when you start pushing the contrast/channels. I look forward to seeing your progression with this. Have a good day!

depending on how I get on I may eventually go for a modified camera as I really do like the results from them, just trying it out atm to see how much I enjoy it.

Cheers Martin. Your right the Black & White stuff is more contrasty but I want to give the swapped channel, & other processing tricks a try as that's more tricky and something I'd like to be able to do well. The B&W stuff is fairly easy to do and not really as challenging and atm I want something that challenges me.

I still think I don't quite have the White Balance right yet and that's really critical using one of these filters.

I think a tip someone gave me was to take/save a custom white balance of some grass on a day with good weather, so you have it available regardless of conditions. Not sure if that helps. I quite like the colour stuff when its punchy blue against that bright white - but yes, can imagine its quite tricky. I also remember reading that a very minimal amount of processing is required if you get it right in camera. Did a quick look on Flickr and the below was done with your camera which I rather like

Interesting but not sure that I like it. Colour IR (real or with a filter) is definitely an acquired taste. I think if you are really interested in IR a modified camera is by far the best way to go - and no I'm not commenting on the fuzzy clouds!

Being able to set a decent custom WB is critical in IR shots. Martin is right about the grass. Set a custon WB by taking a shot of grass on a sunny day and you should be good to go. I have had no luck on my Nikon setting a custom WB and have recently been setting WB in DxO and then processing in LR & CS5 as normal, still not happy with what I'm getting compared to my old Olympus but I'm getting there.
I find exposure is pretty critical and I check the RGB histogram to make sure the red channel hasn't blown.

It looks to me as if you have a hot spot in the centre of this, so check your lens is ok for IR work (google will help).

      Keep at it!

yeah but I don't think I have it quite right yet. When I took the image to create the WB the grass was long and there was a lot of shadow in it so I think I need a better one.

    31. Mark-Stone (10 months ago | reply)

Yeah I think this particular lens does have a small hot spot. Typical of you to notice that ;-)

As I said earlier mate I don't think I have the WB spot on yet and that's the reason I'm having trouble. I'll get it right eventually though just need to try again is all.
