Portrait of a Urban Explorer

Portrait of a Urban Explorer

Taken this morning in the abandoned Marconi factory in Chelmsford, Essex the birthplace of the radio. I thought this could be the style of image taken for an article in a Sunday magazine presenting his life as an urban explorer. Sadly not so many of those type of magazines exist which is a shame as they were part of what Sunday used to be for me. A walk to the local shop and a leisurely read before Sunday lunch.

Two flash units (Vivitar 285hv) used on stands with one orange filter left and a highlight flash behind my subject to the left. I used a fairly long exposure to bring in some of the ambient light from behind the subject. Flash guns fired using Yongnuo RF-602 wireless triggers.

Camera Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Exposure 1.6 second
Aperture f/16.0
Focal Length 20 mm
ISO Speed 200

Abandoned Love (B&W)

Abandoned Love (B&W)

This is what I had originally pre-visualised (see previous version below) but did not complete. Thanks to John Buckley for getting me to finish the job. I had originally imagined this shot as B&W and heavily vignetted like a still from a film. A sort of film noir feel.

Three bare Vivitar flashes used to light the foreground mid-foreground and lady walking away all from the right hand side. Lighting for the car and man standing at the end of the road was using the street lamp. Cactus RF 602 triggers (new purchase) worked very well. Shadow of the man nearest the camera created by the light from a shop behind and then "enhanced" in Photoshop.

10 second exposure to bring in some ambient light.
