A young Afghan boy uses a homemade Afghan flag to shield his eyes from the sun March 21, during a celebration of Islamic New Year near the Nawa district center. More than 1,000 citizens descended upon the district center's open-air bazaar for the festivities. It was the first time in years the holiday was celebrated publicly since the Taliban were flushed out by Marines and Afghan forces last July.
