Potanin Glacier, Altai Tavan Bogd, Western Mongolia
Popping our heads out of the tent a couple of hours later, we are ecstatic to set eyes for the first time on the Five Saints majestically towering high above the glistening ice of the glacier below. Hastily we set off, absolutely thrilled by this mesmerising landscape, although not without a strong awareness that what is heavenly in this instant could quickly change for the worse. So it is with euphoric eyes that we clamber on stone after stone to eventually set foot on the ice proper, yet never allowing our gaze to stray too far from the menacing narrow corridor of unforgiving winds looming high above. Not a soul is here. It is still June and the few adventurers who will attempt the climb to the summit of Mount Khuiten will not arrive until August when the weather will be a tad more stable. It is in complete serenity that we enjoy our time in this most isolated and sublime location.
