Spanish "Virgin and Child" from the 1300s at the Royal Ontario Museum

Spanish "Virgin and Child" from the 1300s at the Royal Ontario Museum

from the museum description: "Virgin and child. This statue is believed to have come from Salamanca Cathedral. Although the erect pose derives from earlier Spanish Romanesque sculpture, the increased naturalism and individual treatment of the facial features and clothing are indicative of the changes which occurred in sculpture during the Gothic period. A row of buttons runs along the Virgin's sleeves. Introduced in the early 1300s, buttons allowed clothing to be contoured to the natural form of the human body for the first time in European history." and "Limestone, hollowed back, gilded and painted decoration. Spain, Salamanca, 1300s"
