about my scoliosis:
it was not typical because it was caused by a hemangioma entwined in my spine. i was aware of this malformation when i was young, but i wasn't told it was causing my spine to curve until the lumbar curve was 65 degrees. with back braces, yoga, and chiropractic care, i put off surgery for a long time because i was uncertain how metal rods would affect the hemangioma. i was kept almost pain free before surgery. but because the hemangioma is entwined in my spine, my back continued to curve, causing a 125 degree lumbar curve. my surgeon did an amazing operation to straighten it, but it was very extensive and there were many complications, including a collapsed lung, inability to walk, and extreme nausea. i lost weight due to these complications, and it was a very long recovery of physical therapy to regain my strength and mobility. i still deal with pain everyday, but am back to my presurgery weight and almost presurgery mobility. i am always working to get stronger and healthier.
