In a very peculiar (red) light situation with no real white balance. I made a b/w out of it, changed the color balance layer underneath. See the noise pattern?

ISO 1600 would explain the noise. Did you use the channel mixer to desaturate? It looks like you're favoring red, which probably accentuated the effect.

Oh my, I totally forgot I've been shooting with 1600 for two days... thanks for the reminder.

1600 also made it possible to speed up the shutter though, so it's good. Of course, the noise was not that strange when I hadn't colorrebalanced it underneath the desaturation layer. I had to though, because freckles and all were not visible and the image seemed really flat. With the color balance, I actually had made it more pink before I sucked out all color.

I didn't use the channel mixer, maybe I should try that!
