On May 22, 2012, the Mayors' Bistate Innovation Team (MBIT) presented the
“beta” version of "Playing to Win in America’s Digital
Crossroads" to Mayors Sly James and Joe Reardon.
Last fall, the two mayors appointed 12 members to the team and asked MARC to provide administrative support to the team. The mayors charged MBIT with developing a playbook of creative ways the community can use Google Fiber to spark economic development, advance opportunities and improve daily life in Kansas City. Since then, team members and many other interested parties have discussed the implications of high-speed broadband for the future of the region.
One key lesson the team learned is that while Google Fiber is the catalyst for this playbook, what we as a community do with this unique opportunity is not just about Google. It’s about sociology, not technology. It’s about becoming a connected, smart, innovative community. It’s about how we organize ourselves to lead the way in the global economy.
"Playing to Win" is the result of seven months of community discussions, but it is also a work in progress. The strategies and pilot projects included in this first draft represent just a fraction of the ideas that people across the region are discussing as excitement builds about the possibilities of Kansas City’s ultra-high-speed fiber network. Over the next month, public feedback will be collected online, at community meetings, and future versions of the playbook will incorporate even more ideas.
