HDR porn

small plane in the larger sizes
do you know what this is? (just curious)
It appears to be on the shots pre HDR. But I think it might be an errant click during editing. I just got apple's aperture, and this is my first shot processed through it. I was wodnering the same thing myself, but I promised my wife I'd be off the computer a half hour ago.
ghost car!
I think this is a very cool element
Its cool and all, but I have to disagree that it's very cool. Now if it were a Star-Ledger, then we'd have very cool. ;-)
dust on sensor
Reflections in HDR are the best
More dust on the sensor.
Beautiful detail in the clouds
I think this Photographer knows there is dust on the sensor...probably not a good idea to nit pick...Great shot by the way
HDR porn by mapgoblin.
Wish I had something to say about this shot. It's an HDR of one of my favorite intersections around madison. Oh yes, it's also a footheld 5 exposure combo. I balanced the camera on my foot.

HDR shots are fun to take and cool to look at, but they do create a lot of meaningless photography. I took this shot because I could, not because I should. But. I just can't stop looking it.

It is a nice shot. I'm torn on HDR. (we like Il Mondo Vecchio in Madison - wonderful restaurant)

njdodge: I too am torn, but I do know that it is a lot of fun to shoot HDR, its very relaxing to not worry about exposure, just compose and click(with braketed shots).

The HDR photos remind me of the old hand-colored photos of the early 1900's. The image is real; the colors are just a tich off, leaving the viewer with a bit of a distorted view of the vividity (is that a word) of the place they're looking at.

I've played a little with Photomatix but haven't gotten a result I'm in love with. I suspect there is much more to this than meets the eye.

Glad everybody likes it. I was just sitting on the bench (you can see the cornor of it on the right) eating ice cream with the little one, and I noticed that there was a nice mix of shadows and bright sun, with a manhole cover in the foreground. So I rested the camera on my foot and ground and fired off some quick shots.

@NJ_dodge: Haven't tried the food at mondo yet, but I do have a couple of shots of it from the outside looking in. I'll have to check them again for keepers.

@drumwhistles: what I consider to be the magic of photomatix is not where I was first looking, you have to "create and HDR image" and then use "Tone mapping". The colors don't have to be super saturated, it's just more fun that way.

@brent: lucky me, I hadn't even noticed the lights. great catch. thanks.

I'd love to know more about what people like about this image? I can't say that it's one my favorites, but 1,900 people have viewed it and 37 of you call it a favorite. I almost didn't bother shooting it, and then came very close to not posting it. But now it's by far my most interesting picture.

A couple people have mentioned the composition, but I'm not sure what it is that you guys like. I dig the buildings on the left, a few of the lines on the bottom, and hte sky is neat. But I don't feel like they work together very well.

What about this image makes it a favorite? or atleast interesting to you?

Thank you all for the gracious comments, and the insight into what makes this shot tick.

It is a lovely HDR with lots of detail to look at. The composition is interesting and the low angle amplifies the sense of scale.

The only downer for me is that the color saturation is a bit exagerated, which makes this look more like a digital painting rather than a photo - if this had more of a natural look I think it would have been an absolute winner.
