Seascape #3 - Last rays of 2011

Seascape #3 - Last rays of 2011

Taken just a few minutes before the sun set, the last remaining daylight for 2011 :). I was playing around with the tilt feature of the camera, this was with a 4º upward tilt. All I can say is, I've got a lot to learn to master it properly :)

I printed this on MGIV, but, on hindsight, a warmer-based paper may be better. Also I wish I have some ferri / bleach available so that I can enlighten the sun's rays and reflection in the water, selectively.

Straight scan from the print. There's something wrong with my development for this roll, as you can see on the left side of the print. Most likely due to uneven development. Anyway for this print, I could burn the sky for at least half stop to bring in some details. On second thought, however, for my next print of this, I may crop this into a panaroma.

Seascape #1

Playing around with long exposures during the recent Christmas holiday period. I was up early to catch the high tide around 8.15am. It was very blustery that Boxing Day and you can see the effects on the tree looking rather blurry and 'dreamy' as it swayed the whole time I was making the exposure. Also, the scan here seems to look, at least on my screen, 'creamier' than the actual print is. There must be a setting I need to change in the scanner software which I don't have a clue :).

As for the print, I experimented with a method used by Bob Carnie, discussed on APUG here, where he makes use of some sort of a variation to the split-grade printing method. Roughly what he does is he first chooses an exposure that gives nice slightly off-whites to the highlights using normal-ish grade and then makes a 'blast' of Grade-5 exposures, at the same exposure time or less, to bring in the blacks and contrast.

Infrared-scape #2

My second print from the roll, to see how much 'wood effect" I can get shooting this scene which has coconut trees lining a small stream. For the print, I should have used a lower grade to tone down the contrasty scene and burn the top left to balance the dark sky on the right as well as the cloud. Also perhaps dodge some of the trees.

My first ever time shooting an infrared film. As I was very much unsure about the exposure and correct EI, I bracketed a lot. I think for each scene, I took at least 3 or 4 shots, just to be sure. I know it's lame :) I'm thinking, next I'll print this on warmtone paper and developer to compare how different it'll look.

This was taken in a village next to my in-laws'. There's this one house where the owner had these 4 bikes (may be still working, who knows) hanged on steel poles for decoration purposes. IMHO it's rather need as you can't really miss his house, stands out from the others :) When I was a kid, I learnt to ride using my grandfather's bicycle not too dissimilar to this.
