I have seen this for most of January, if my memory is correct. I had first thought it was just my Firefox when upgraded to 1.5 with new extensions.

re: is this just a % or will everyone see this one day?

google, like amazon, etc. is doing an A-B test. for instance, they might look at a metric like click through over to the other search types. if that metric goes up, this might make it's way over to 100% of users.

The new upcoming / under dev Google search page looks quiet swanky. But overall it’s a little bit crowded. And moreover when / if newer aspects are added to a page, it takes up more time to download, on the users screen. When it comes to Hi-Speed Broadband users it’s not such a big deal. But if you will consider the average surfer around the world, who doesn’t use/have a Hi-Speed Broadband connection, it matters.

So the main focus of Google should be to display the results the same way & in same speed it is being today. But anyways the Google search results page definitely needs an overhaul & I guess they will do the best for the same.

I would hope, if it is truly a Google change, that it is available as an option and not required. As a tablet user, I see it as more difficult for anybody using a portrait (as opposed to landscape) screen. It cuts me off from all those lovely advertisements! Now, if it is smart enough to detect the aspect ratio of the screen and switch automatically....THAT would be ideal.

wow - this is a real secret, how to get 30.000 views in only 2 days!!

Interesting - I am not seeing this with Firefox 1.5 on a Mac.

The 30,000 hits comes from being prominently featured in an InfoWorld article. =)

I knew I wasn't going crazy! Today I was searching and all of a sudden it looked just like it looked in your image. I was like "what the heck". I thought it was something in my firefox but i remember i dont have any extensions installed for it on this pc. Anyway I reloaded and it was gone.

I told some people and I had no proof. Mow I found this image in your flickr. Phew good to know I'm not going psycho! heh.

I don't like it. It seems more cluttered now, and there is just a big gap there of wasted space. I think they should have an option that you could change the interface.
