Many Yucatecos are overweight - through no "fault" of their own - because of the corn tortilla that is the government subsidized basis of the diet of poor people. It is the same in the U.S. If someone is poor there, they get Food Stamps, eat "cheap" (pasta, beans, rice, etc) and their weight skyrockets. The new generation of Yucatecos is far more nutrition savvy and knows that, if they want to lose weight - just don't eat what poor people have to eat. Simple as that.
