Cafe Satan

Cafe Satan by malias.
When I arrived in Paris 3 years ago there was one Starbucks (at Opera) now they are everywhere and a new one is springing up everyday. It's becoming as bad as London or American cities. The local cafes are being driven out of business. I wouldn't mind so much but the coffee is pretty bad. What to do?

multi everything It's not so much that it's bad it is rather that they are completely soulless places, they are everywhere and they often put the independent cafes out of business.

To have a Starbucks in Paris is like bringing Owls to Athens. Such a shame that tourist will stick to the big brand rather than go for the real thing.

Well, being americanized seems a like a fashion nowaday. Even people don't like McDonald they end up eating there once in a while....

Starbucks is the WalMartization of the coffee houses. I think even I have a Starbucks opening up in my pants! These places have swallowed up the independents and taken the soul from the communal
coffee house.. I miss the old, funky places with books and worn sofas..good people to talk to and a chromeless ambiance...

I like starbucks frappichinos that I buy at the market, 7-11 has exotic coffees at a much cheaper price, anyway it's better to go to a real coffee house that's one of a kind, and then maybe starbucks wouldn't act so fifi, I sort of like their coffee, but it is bitter and a monopoly, but they do have gifts you can buy and I guess it's ok for meeting people.

I see there hasn't been a post on here for awhile, but I came across this and wanted to add my thoughts.

First, have they closed any of the Starbucks yet? They've closed over 300 the last year here in the States. Also, other than numerous stores, I wouldn't compare them to Walmart in the least; Walmart truly does strive to keep prices as low as possible for the consumer, and tries to offer quality merchandise at a discount price. Starbucks does the opposite—their coffee is sub-standard, and far overpriced, in my opinion. But, people are finally catching on, and the company is suffering for it.

Lastly, the good news out of all this is that many local cafés are springing up here all the time, and people love them. Let Starbucks do as they will, but the market and demand will cut them down to size.

Thanks for posting!
