1982 Diego Garcia

As a Royal Australian Navy Sub Lieutenant, I was liaison officer with the US Navy Task Force 70 Diego Garcia detachment.

I was there for two months in late 1982, met some great people, experienced fabulous beaches and marine life, and saw a slice of military life on a grand scale.

The atoll is in the central Indian Ocean and forms part of the British Indian Ocean Territory. Administered by the British military, although 95% of the personnel are from the USA.

Usually a restricted access area at that time, I was given unfettered access to the eastern side of the atoll, which is largely in a natural condition.

Some of the nicest beaches I have visited are to be found along the lagoon fringes of Diego Garcia.
