Salt Lake City Light Pollution

Salt Lake City Light Pollution by makelessnoise.
Looking South-South West over Salt Laky City as seen from the air. This is light pollution from carelessly aimed lights. It's an expensive, unneccessary nuisance.

This exposure was less than 1/10th of a second. That's a lot of wasted light.

You are a crusader... good on you. You wouldn't happen to be an amateur astronomer...

Muzz - lol. Ever since I realized that light should be directed at its target, I've been going bonkers seeing bad lighting all around. You'll see it in your city, too. Dunno if you've had a chance to read up on it, though. It's costing and estimated $10B/year in the USA - for no reason at all.

Oh, I'm an amateur astronomer... lol. And we've been talking about this since forever. My first car had a bumper sticker which said "stop light pollution" and a light bulb with a red slash through it.

I have lived in the SLC area for 3 years, and the unnecessary lighting is infuriating. I brought a friend who has lived in SLC her whole life to my very rural hometown in Colorado this year, and she was speechless at how beautiful the night sky can be. Sad how I had almost forgotten myself. Thank you so much for the picture!

The "hidden" harm of light pollution has been an ever increasing problem since as long ago as 1897 - YES 1897! The LA Times carried an article , 14 September , that electricity would extirpate songbirds - by killing their insect food supply. Songbirds would starve. Today it not only kills birds, it disrupts human health and takes cash from our pocket books. Unnecessary light at night really is killing off Life On Earth.
Read the new CfDS handbook "Blinded by the Light?" to learn more.

wow, it's sad how you can tell the difference between where the mountains are, and where the valley is. The Salt Lake CIty Foothills is that black patch on the left.

I moved to SLC three years ago, and while it's starting to grow on me (and at the same time I want to move away, go figure), I absolutely can't stand light polution! I come from a small town of 2,500 people in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in a National Forest. No lights there! The only night sky I can see in SLC consists of a few constellations that are more well-known because they are more recognizable. I've never once seen clusters, the Milky Way, or even many in the Zodiac Belt. Once I was on Cedar Mountain in Cedar City and I could catch a glimpse of a starry sky, but other than that, I've not seen much. GC2001 makes an excellent and scary comment...songbirds! I miss those from home as well, opening the bedroom window on a spring morning and hearing oodles of birds singing from the forest. I've only heard a few here, mostly because I live in a little Sugarhouse neighborhood.

Utah actually has a lot of great and really good spots to observer, you just have to look for them. Also, those area's are slowly going away too. The only black areas we have are the Salt Flats, The Uinta's, and the national parks (one or two).

da burger - Absolutely. Utah's got it better than most. Reasonably short drives to high altitude, low humidity, and mountains to block city light. It's definitely a decent place. As you noted, it's not bad... for now.

so true, we could something about it. I have noticed the majority of Light Pollution comes from big factories, or business (Smith's, Wal-mart, the Kennecott Smelter, car dealers, etc...). But some companies, Like Win-co, Harmon's, have well-shielded lights. So if we can get the big companies to fix their lights, we can make a huge difference, because sooner or later, the only black areas we could find will be outside our country.
