360 Panorama: Reed College War Memorial and Protest

360 Panorama: Reed College War Memorial and Protest by Major Clanger.
Best seen big, or in a viewer, or blogged.

The other panorama is taller so you can see the flag pole.

Signs say:

"3,000 red flags
represent the 3,055
America soldiers who have died in the war in Iraq.
*In addition 356 soldiers have died in Afghanistan."

"655,000 Iraqis have died.
Each of the 120,000 white flags represent
6 Iraqi soldiers and civilians who have
died in the
War in Iraq"

As mentioned on Boing Boing: The numbers are derived from the highly controversial Lancet study that used unverified sampling methodology. Iraq Body Count, which documents verifiable deaths, currently places the number of civilians killed at over an order of magnitude less—at maximum, 64,444.

See here.

Also, the red flags were not distributed evenly within the white; there was a large red square of them.

people need to see this.. to grasp the extent of death in a visual form

would be intense if they could have 655,000 white flags..

I'm tired of hearing that the Lancet study is "controversial." If any number is suspect, it is the 64k Iraq Body Count, which serves its role at providing a solid lower bound on the estimate of civilian deaths. Luckily another BoingBoing reader beat me to the punch on this.

See here.

Other than that, thank you for posting the photo. Greatly appreciated.

Thanks! I posted the update from Boing Boing in an attempt to remain impartial, and I regret it now. :-( I remember the episode of This American Life now. It seems that the controversy could be more political than scientific .

I posted the following comment to all my other pictures. See Boing Boing for more details on the accuracy, it appears the numbers may be corrrect.

If 1 white flag = 6 Iraqi deaths, then 1 red flag ought to have = 6 US deaths. The loss of these lives should be treated equally even if it means that those 500 red flags would have been lost in a sea of 120,000 white ones. That is the reality of this war. Thank you so much for posting the photos, they are striking. Once again, I am proud to be a Reed grad ('95).
