“This is America”? I’ve never quite understood the “American as apple pie” thing? Apple pie isn’t American surely :-\

I doubt apple pie is an American invention, but Michael Pollan, in his Botany of Desire does explain that most of the usable apple varieties are American.

Other thoughts?

I don’t think apples are a native America fruit!

Supposedly Apples don't come "true" from seed. That is, the seeds of an Apple produce new trees that are hugely different -- and often uneatable -- from their parent. Uneatable, of course, is a relative thing, and they still produce usable amounts of sugar.

Pollan's book describes apples being used only in the production of hard cider until sometime in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Apparently, the broad distribution of seeds planted to produce cider trees in the US created the diversity opportunity for a few trees with flavorful apples to mature. Those few trees have been propagated by grafting their branches onto new root-stock ever since.

All of this comes from Botany of Desire, a book I'd recommend to anybody even curious about this.

Apples have been eaten as a dessert for hundreds (probably thousands) of years, I know there are recopies for apple pie from as early as the 14th century.
