Affinity Diagraming @ FLOSS HCI Workshop at SIGCHI 2010
Time to affinity-diagram and break out into groups for mini conferences! The groups we came up with were:
1) CHI Community
- open source design research tools are different
- different problems between general CHI and FLOSS chi
- generative and emergent methodologies
- HCI methods devleoped for novice?
- cost of solving niche problems
- academic community work on real projects
- use open source tools
- established usability method effetiveness in open source?
2) Design Patterns
open source design
open library
open up the svgs
establish principles
google usability patterns
3) Rethinking design in open source
- foss development analogy for design
- put design first
- work with users more closely
- closed feedback loop
- developing our own methods
- crowdsourcing
- novice adoption vs niche
4) Tools
- filtering
- condensing
-dialog between developers and designers proprietary vs open
- mailman 2.0 with diagrams
- operationalize hci principles in tools
- apply design to improve communication
5) Recruiting
- students
- build a portfolio
- talent is rare
- collective talent
- just making designs open not enough, have to actively invite and
recruit
- need more designers in open source
