Lunch Lizard

Lunch Lizard

No species ID yet I'm afraid. Still looking through the books. Impossible task with Lizards!
I lay flat on my stomach "lounging" with the lizard for about an hour waiting for a bug or larvae to drop out the foliage above us :) He was pretty relaxed with me quite close and with the Sigma 100-300mm f/4 I captured a lot of good images.

ETA 2012/01/19: ID just in! Thanks to Trevor from www.hardaker.co.za Common Flat Lizard (Platysaurus intermedius) Possibly male. Damn and I thought I had a new species :)

"Bird and Branch"
So stoked. Got my 1st DPC Ribbon (Yellow - 3rd Place) for a wildlife shot. bit.ly/uWmTEW

It was just edged out by Johanna's classy "Seams and Stilettos" and Johns poetic "Shepherds and sheep"

African Marsh (Reed?) Warbler (Acrocephalus baeticatus)

African Marsh (Reed?) Warbler (Acrocephalus baeticatus)

Also a new sighting, or should I say a new ID :) Probably seen them before but it's an LBJ so who knows. I hope I've ID'd correctly. If not let me know! Is the African Reed Warbler the same thing? He would hop from reed to reed and occasionally strike the water catching water-borne insects. Needless to say I missed getting a shot of every strike.

Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio porphyrio)

Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio porphyrio)

1st ever sighting for me of this beautiful Gallinule. There was a pair. Very elusive. Hangs out close to the reeds for safety. Dashes into the reeds if threatened or frightened. Comically flicks his tail to show white patch every few seconds. Chased by the Red knobbed Coots and Cormorants. I guess because the Gallinule is known to eat other chicks.
