Hoop Pine - Oxley Reserve, Murrumba Downs by MagicTyger

Hoop Pine - Oxley Reserve, Murrumba Downs

This is the only remaining Hoop Pine (Araucaria Cunninghamii) at Oxley Reserve, Murrumba Downs, on the north bank of the North Pine River about 2km west of Petrie.

John Oxley came ashore here on 1 December 1823. He was impressed with many "fine cypresses" he saw there referring to the Hoop Pines. This was the first reference to the species, which was later cataloged by English botanist and explorer, Allan Cunningham.

The first settlers loved these huge trees for their long straight trunks which were ideal for ship masts or any buildings which required large quantities of long straight timber.

Today if you drive down Gympie Road, Strathpine, you'll see the road lined with dozens of Hoop Pines on either side - a fitting tribute to this majestic tree, native to this area.

Kobble Creek by MagicTyger

Kobble Creek

Simon and I rode up Kobble Creek today.

We were looking for a track up to Mt Glorious along Dales Road, and Raynbird Creek Road - but alas it's not there!

Nevertheless the ride was picturesque, and at any other time of year it would have been pleasant.

Today it was "challenging" because we had to cross a few flooded streams.

I felt really smug riding across all this fast flowing water - some of it thigh-deep and flowing fast.

But nature had the last laugh. On the final crossing, 1km from our finishing point, I rode into the fast flowing stream and the water pushed my derailleur into my spokes, and it snapped off.

Serves me right for being so foolhardy.

This video: An hour earlier I was able to ride across this creek. Coming back it had risen slightly, which made crossing more difficult.

I felt reall smug riding across all this fast flowing water - some of it thigh-deep and flowing fast.

This photo: I'm checking out my busted rear derailleur. How the heck do I ride home without any traction on the back?

This photo: We couldn't ride across this, but we waded across carrying the bikes.

This video: Simon wanted to know how deep it was. "Too deep" is the answer.
