The Amorphophallus titanum ( Corpse Flower ) at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in Brooklyn NYC New York
History and Botany of the Titan Arum Fact File * Scientific name: Amorphophallus titanum * Botanical family: Araceae * Distribution: Western Sumatra * Hardiness: Frost-tender * Preferred conditions: Tropical rainforest; shady sites in rich, moist soil; high humidity and warmth * Conservation status (IUCN Red List): Vulnerable Famed for its huge, triffidlike flower head and equally impressive foul smell, the titan arum is one of the world's most remarkable plants. The flowering process unwinds over the course of several weeks. After the flower spike fades, a single huge, umbrella-like leaf emerges from the giant tuber, which can weigh nearly 200 lbs. In the wild, this leaf can grow 20 feet tall, with a 15-foot spread of its compound blade; in cultivation, a more modest 12-foot growth is common. CommentsMacRonin47 says:Thanks ...
