Lunar Eclipse Series

Lunar Eclipse Series by macmoov.
My lunar eclipse photos

See it BIG. Warning over 9000 pixels wide :-)

I shot the eclipse with my Canon 5D and 500mm f4 lens. I also attached my 1.4 extender which gave me an effective focal length of 700mm. All of the photos stitched together via photoshop.

Wow, that is some serious clarity. I'm jealous of your 500mm. Do you use it for birding?

I primarily use it that lens for bigger wildlife. But the main reason I got that lens was to shoot the Bald Eagles at Conowingo Dam during the Fall.

Nice shot(s)...never thought 700mm worth of lens would offer that much detail of the moon. Don't know what ISO you used or if you knocked down any noise after the shot...but the quality is great! Really cool!

The starting photos were taken at 1/200th of second, f8 at ISO100. As the moon got darker I was slowing the shutter and changing ISO until eventually I was shooting at 1.3 sec, f5.6 and ISO400 for the full eclipse phase. I didn't do any noise reduction other than the camera's built-in long exposure noise reduction program (basically the dark frame subtraction process.)

The moon actually moves pretty fast, you may notice that the full eclipse photos are not as sharp as the full moon photos. That is because at a 1 second exposure the moon moved during that time and you are seeing a little motion blur.

I ran into the same problem. Shooting an eclipse is no easy task!

this is wonderful---and thanks for posting the shooting info--that helps me learn; how did you figure out the settings--or did you just "play around" before the eclipse started?

I have shot the full moon many times in the past and have a fairly good idea on how to expose for that. A full moon is alot brighter than people think.

When it came to the eclipse this article came in handy from the NYIP about shooting eclipses.

And as always the histogram is your friend when you have difficult exposure decisions to make.
