Two Guys on Uto

Two Guys on Uto

My good friend Chuck and I headed out in the summer of 1980 to give a go at the north-west ridge of Sir Donald (right hand skyline). The night of our bivuoac brought a very close lightning storm that saw us reaching out in the night from our bivi sacs and throwing metal gear away from us, afraid of a lightning strike. (Like that would have done any good!) The morning was very unsettled and after spend a long time on the Uto - Sir Donald col, we decided to climb Uto. On the summit, I placed my camera on a rock and took this shot, thus the blurred rock in the foreground. We climbed Sir Donald the next year on a gloriously sunny day.

I have a write-up of the climb up Uto on the 1980s page of the Red Lobster Journals.

More Relics From The Past

More Relics From The Past

I know so little of what life was like for my grandparents when they tilled the soil in Finland and then came to Canada to create a better life. My grandfather, who I never met, then worked in the mines and died of silicosis when my father was very young. I suppose many people found solace in faith.

Steelhead Falls January 2012

Steelhead Falls January 2012

I went for a drive with my camera equipment today not quite knowing where I would end up and found myself hiking the short trail into Steelhead Falls near Stave Falls, B.C. There is a lot of history around the Stave Falls area what with the old dam and museum and the logging history of the whole area and I wanted to give this image a bit of a feel of age.

This is based on two exposures blended together in order to give more detail to the water which was blown out in one of the exposures. I also made use of Topaz Adjust's "setting sun" filter to give the plants a warm, slightly brown look.

As always, thoughtful feedback and suggestions are always appreciated.

Entering Jupiter's Atmosphere

Entering Jupiter's Atmosphere

This is a tribute of sorts to Stanley Kubrik's 2001 A Space Odyssey. My local camera club had a macro theme and I used my new close-up lenses for my 50mm and took a series of close-ups of my wife's eye while she looked outside through the window. Needless to say a lot of Photoshop play took place. A Topaz filter was thrown in for good measure, along with a deep space Hubble picture.
