Ring-necked Pheasant

Ring-necked Pheasant

Found this guy on a rainy day on Antelope Island. He was busy feeding in a muddy parking lot and didn't seem all that concerned with me. He actually kept coming closer and closer. I feel this shot is a little too close for my tastes. But I got a nice sequence from another call that I’ll post when I have time, probably next week.

Belted Kingfisher (Female)

Belted Kingfisher (Female)

Heavy crop and too cluttered for my tastes but it's a Kingfisher! I've figured out this girls territory and I have a good idea which perch is her favorite. So one of these days I plan to set up a blind and see what happens.

She sat on this perch for well over 20 minutes. I was hoping for some hunting action but I guess she just wanted to enjoy the springlike weather.

Great Egret

Great Egret

This isn't a bird I expected to see at Farmington Bay. I've been going there every other day hoping to photograph some eagles. There are a few balds out on the ice, but that's it, it’s nothing like last year. I haven't managed a single good shot of one. I also haven't seen a Great Egret here in the winter before...so maybe the two are related.

I was told by a guy out walking his dog that this egret has been fishing the same pond every night for the past week. It’s a friendly bird and didn’t mind me or the other guy walking by or the dog for that matter. It just ignored us and continued to fish. I love it when an animal acts naturally around humans, It is rare but it does happen every once in awhile.

I spent about an hour watching him hunt as the sun set. It caught about six fish. As soon as the sun dropped behind the mountains, he took off to roost.
