Panamax ship from Chile moving thru the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal

Panamax ship from Chile moving thru the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal

This particular ship paid $300K (based on bow size) to cross the canal and would have spent $4mil in fuel had it chosen to go around Cape Horn instead. Ship's clearance is about 8 inches on each side of lock chamber. 2 lock chambers going each direction, water level lowered 20 feet at first lock chamber in about 10 mins to allow ship to cross from Pacific to Caribbean. Incredible!

Desayuno al fresco

Desayuno al fresco

Tesoro Escondido Lodge deep in the jungle near Playa Bluff, Bocas del Toro, Isla Colon, Panama. This rustic, artsy place uses only solar and wind-generated power to provide 24-hr electricity and ample hot water. The 5 resident dogs were cool, too, and would accompany you on walks through the jungle and even find a monkey or two for you to watch playing in the trees.
