Deep-fried octodogs
Deep-frying "octodogs" (octopus-shaped hot dogs) gives a better curl to the "tentacles" but adds oil. Details on frying here, full tutorial with water-based cooking is here at Lunch in a Box.

The one in front really looks tentacle-y. It's almost creepy. ;0)

Hey - I tried this myself (where is my picture? I seem to have lost it!) and found that doing it in the microwave worked perfectly! Put them on their side until the tentacles start to separate, then put them upright on the tentacles and cook till they are totally curled.
I did a Beatles Octopus's Garden theme with collard greens and rice with a note on top that said, "I'd like to be.... under the sea... in an....." and let my daughter guess what it was.
Anyway, thanks for the idea. It was a hit. Hope the microwave tip helps you speed things up a bit. :)

stephee> You know, a reader left a comment (on the blog post, maybe? don't remember) that she does something similar by shoving a chopstick up the bottom of the split hot dog (ow!), propping the chopstick/hotdog up in a cup/glass, and then nuking. She said she has good results like that -- sounds similar. I'll have to try the microwave method out one of these days -- thanks for the suggestion, stephee! :-)
