Spam musubi

    Newer Older

Made these for a friend's wedding a couple of years ago -- her family is crazy for Spam. Very labor-intensive, but well worth it for special occasions.

Spam musubi is fried Spam with a teriyaki sauce coating, on top of flavored sushi rice and a sprinkling of furikake (sprinkles typically including seaweed, sesame seeds and some kind of salty element such as dried fish, egg, vegetables or wasabi). The whole thing is kept together with a band of nori (seaweed). I first made it mostly as a joke about five years ago for a local luau with Hawaiian expats, but in the process discovered that it tastes *really* good! Now I make huge batches like this twice a year: for the annual luau and my friend's family campout (her Filipino/Miwok Indian family is crazy for Spam).
