An ar15 is no more an assault rifle than any hunting firearm, you get hung up over looks as opposed to function, and sort of ruins your credibility.

Being black doesn't mean it is more deadly.

so everything needs to be designed for multiple purposes? really?

    3. lunchbreath 10 months ago | reply

not at all. just that i continue to wonder why civilians would need to own something created purely to kill humans.

    4. lunchbreath 10 months ago | reply

Elmira, the AR-15 was created as a military weapon. The civilian version may be dumbed down and legalized, but the mfr damn well knows that if they sold the same hardware with a wooden stock nobody would buy it. The same way that Hummers want to look like the original HMMWVs. We associate military hardware with power and purpose, and it makes us feel good to possess those tools. Some people deserve to use them, some don't. I don't trust that we have enough checks to sort out the assholes.

well, we're lucky to live in a stable country. If you lived in a country like Darfur, you might have a different opinion (and if you could afford the weapons to protect your family).

also, add cigarettes to the that list of things that kill humans (if not immediately). Drunk drivers? Ban alcohol?

This is not a good time to be defending the rights of psychopaths to shoot people in cinemas.

I imagine a future where everyone walks around in full body armor carrying assault rifles, you know, just to be safe.

A friend of mine has an AR-15 Assault Rifle. I asked him why and he said "It's a great squirrel gun. I just sit on my porch and pick off squirrels". So I guess THAT blows your argument to shit, huh? (<--that's sarcasm BTW).

My response was "wait, you need an ASSAULT RIFLE to SHOOT SQUIRRELS?!? Doesn't that seem a little unbalanced to you???"

Bottom line, sad to say, is that the wingnuts will never see it any other way...

When did an AR-15 become a common murder weapon? I support gun control but stuff like this doesn't present a fair perspective on the issue. It just makes us look silly.

    11. informed.citizen 10 months ago | reply

This is BS. AR-15s are hunting rifles. They are not "Assault Rifles" because they are not fully automatic. The AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle just like the .22 LR you buy at Wal-Mart to shoot squirrels with.
Until you get educated you are just making yourselves look stupid. Also, when you finally get your way, if you finally get your way, and all the guns are taken. Only criminals will have them, and your govt will be tyrants over you.
If you took the time to do some research you would see that firearms save the live of innocents more than they kill. My wife and daughter was saved by a 9mm when an attacker thought they were easy prey. I guess you would have had my daughter stolen from me, and my wife rapped.
Listen! When seconds count, the cops are minutes away!

Any type of gun control is a declaration of war on our sovereignty.

You know the first use of a knife? Sticking into people.

    14. lunchbreath 10 months ago | reply

I'm always impressed at how a group of individuals that is so intense about sovereignty, self-determination and independence is so rote at repeating the soundbites that their NRA lobbyists have written for them. Sorry, I don't buy that you need these things, but obviously I recognize that you have a legal right to them. So far.

also, just to be clear, another typical argument that i see from the pro-gun crowd is "i guess you would just let them rape my wife" --- which is basically just a way to suggest that owning a gun means being a real man. I assume you use this argument because you think that people who don't own guns are weak and afraid, because you don't know them and it fits the narrative that guns mean strength. I've stepped into the middle of a serious domestic assault between total strangers, involving a boyfriend who was apeshit crazy and I'm damn glad that neither he nor I had a gun. I know that even without a gun I'm willing to protect someone. I'm sorry you think you need one to do so.

Awesome illustration, lunchbreath. Keep up the good work. Here's some more ammo for the discussion (from this site):

An FBI report,"Crime in the United States, 1973" states that a gun kept in the home for self-defense is six times more likely to be used in a deliberate or accidental homicide involving a relative or friend than a burglar or unlawful intruder. More recently, criminologist Arthur Kellerman declared that for every case of gun use for self defense, there are 43 instances where guns are used in suicides, homicides and accidental deaths. But that number may be a bit conservative. According to Federal statistics, for every time a handgun is used by a citizen to kill a criminal, 118 innocent people are killed in handgun murders, suicides and accidents. Studies have shown that people who keep guns at home nearly TRIPLE their chances of being murdered. Whats more, a gun kept at home is 37 times more likely to be used to commit suicide than to be used for self defense. Still believe that possession of a gun makes you safer?

      Consider this :
According to criminologist Arthur Kellermann almost 20 percent of the police officers who are fatally wounded with firearms are shot with their own gun.

Perfectly done...except that the gun nuts insist on critiquing the illustration (that's obviously intended to represent an assault rifle), while conveniently ignoring the message. The crystal-clear point point being made is that assault rifles are made to kill people and they serve no other purpose.

      ban assault rifles yesterday!

To the end of gun nut arguments I always add "and that's why you need to accept the murder of children like I do." It makes their real position so much clearer.

I don't think the wood chipper was a murder weapon.
It was more of a waste disposal device.
      Right, Margie?
